About the product
Buffalo Trace Old Charter Oak Fine Oak is part of the distillery’s Experimental Series, designed to explore how different oak species influence bourbon character. This release is matured in barrels made from fine grain oak, resulting in a distinctive and refined profile.
On the palate, it opens with notes of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak, followed by layers of baking spice, light honey, and subtle fruit. The fine grain oak contributes a smoother, more delicate wood influence, enhancing balance without overpowering the bourbon’s core sweetness.
The texture is soft and well-rounded, leading to a smooth, medium-length finish with lingering vanilla, gentle spice, and light oak.
Innovative and nuanced, Old Charter Oak Fine Oak offers a unique perspective on barrel influence, making it an appealing choice for both collectors and bourbon enthusiasts.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairings
Taste Notes
- Nose Soft and aromatic. It opens with honeycomb and dried apricot, followed by a very refined scent of sandalwood and vanilla wafer. There is almost no "ethanol sting," only a gentle sweetness.
- Palate Silky and elegant. You will find toffee and light maple syrup leading the way, transitioning into a mid-palate of golden raisins, toasted coconut, and white pepper. The oak influence is present but tastes like "sweet cedar" rather than "burnt wood."
- Finish Clean and medium-long. It leaves a lingering trail of baking spices (nutmeg) and sweet cream, with a final, floral puff of chamomile and light oak.
Food Pairings
The refined, honeyed nature of the "Fine Oak" makes it a perfect companion for lighter, more nuanced dishes that would be overwhelmed by a higher-proof bourbon.
- Savory Honey-Glazed Salmon or Scallops. The delicate sweetness of the seafood mirrors the apricot and honey notes in the whiskey.
- Main Roasted Pork Loin with an Apple Compote. The orchard fruit notes in the bourbon (apricot/apple) act as a direct bridge to the fruit in the dish.
- Cheese Brie or Camembert with Honey. The creamy texture of the cheese highlights the "Fine Oak's" silky mouthfeel, while the honey echoes the nose.
- Sweet Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée. The burnt sugar topping of the dessert pulls out the light toffee and vanilla wafer notes in the spirit.
About the brand
The Old Charter brand has been part of the Buffalo Trace portfolio since 1999, but the Oak Series was launched to turn the brand into a "living laboratory." While the mash bill remains the classic Buffalo Trace Mash #1 (the same low-rye recipe used for Eagle Rare and Benchmark), the variable is always the barrel. The "Fine Oak" experiment proves that it’s not just the type of wood that matters, but the anatomy of the tree itself. Because tight-grained wood is less porous, the whiskey undergoes a gentler maturation, resulting in a spirit that feels "older" in its complexity but "younger" in its lack of harsh, woody astringency.
