Named after the historic rum-running ship “Malahat,” the distillery embraces a spirit of bold character and craftsmanship, creating distinctive small-batch whiskeys inspired by American distilling innovation.

This expression is made from 100% malted barley, following the growing tradition of American single malt whiskey production. The whiskey is carefully distilled and matured in oak barrels, allowing the spirit to develop a rich malt-forward character balanced with notes derived from the oak aging process.

About the brand

The Name: The brand is named after the Malahat, a famous five-masted schooner known as the "Queen of Rum Row." During Prohibition, this ship anchored in international waters off the California coast, serving as a massive floating warehouse that supplied rum-runners with illicit spirits.The Founders: Founded in 2012 by friends Tom Bleakley, Tony Grillo, and Ken Lee, the distillery was built on the philosophy of using natural, high-quality ingredients and traditional 20th-century methods.The Craft: Every bottle is distilled in custom-designed copper pot stills. The founders are known for their hands-on approach, often personally signing the labels and overseeing the aging process in their Miramar-based warehouse.
