About the product
Claxton’s Springbank 8 Year Old is a limited independent bottling that showcases the distinctive character of Campbeltown whisky. Selected and bottled by Claxton’s, it captures a unique cask expression of Springbank, offering individuality and depth.
On the palate, it reveals a complex profile of orchard fruit, citrus zest, and honey, layered with notes of malt, vanilla, and gentle spice. Subtle maritime influences bring a light salinity, while hints of soft peat smoke add depth without overwhelming the balance.
The texture is slightly oily and full-bodied, leading to a long, warming finish with lingering fruit, coastal notes, soft smoke, and spice.
Characterful and limited, this release is ideal for enthusiasts seeking a distinctive Campbeltown single malt with both freshness and complexity.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairings
Taste Notes
This 8-year-old is remarkably dense for its age, trading the "bright fruit" of youth for a heavy, dessert-like weight.
- Nose Unmistakably Campbeltown. It hits with dunnage floor earthiness and machine oil, quickly followed by the PX influence: sticky raisins, figs, and honeyed heather. There is a peculiar, pleasant scent of cake batter and baking spice.
- Palate Rich and oily. It opens with sweet syrupy sherry and golden raisins, which are immediately met by a wave of lactic "funk," soot, and brine. The peat is present but "muddy" and earthy rather than sharp or smoky.
- Finish Medium to long and warming. It leaves a lingering trail of red fruits, tingly ginger, and old leather, with a final, oily coating of sea salt and minerals.
Food Pairings
The combination of sweet PX sherry and savory "machine oil" funk makes this a challenging but rewarding partner for bold flavors.
- Savory Seared Duck Breast with a Balsamic Fig Glaze. The fig in the sauce pulls out the PX sherry notes, while the duck’s gaminess stands up to the Campbeltown oiliness.
- Main Smoked Venison or Haggis. The earthy, peppery nature of traditional Scottish fare is a perfect structural match for the dunnage and soot notes of the whisky.
- Cheese Aged Shropshire Blue or Gorgonzola Dolce. The creamy, metallic blue veins in the cheese harmonize with the oily, mineral "industrial" notes of the spirit.
- Sweet Sticky Toffee Pudding. This is a classic "flavor bridge"—the dates and dark sugar in the pudding are a direct mirror to the First-Fill PX cask influence.
About the brand
Claxton’s is a family-owned independent bottler based at the Dalswinton Bond in the Scottish Lowlands. They are known for their "Warehouse No. 1" series, which focuses on single-cask releases matured in traditional dunnage warehouses (earthen floors). Because Springbank rarely allows independent bottlers to use their name on the label, Claxton's releases this under the "Campbeltown" banner. By choosing a First-Fill PX Hogshead, Claxton’s has created a "Sherry Bomb" that doesn't mask the spirit, but rather wrestles with the aggressive, industrial peat that defines the region.
