About the product

Bruichladdich Black Art is a mysterious and highly sought-after unpeated Islay single malt, crafted from rare, aged casks selected by the distillery’s head whisky maker. Known for its secrecy, the exact cask composition remains undisclosed, creating an enigmatic and complex whisky.

On the palate, it reveals a rich and layered profile with notes of dark fruit, fig, and raisin, complemented by honey, vanilla, and caramel. Hints of chocolate, spice, and subtle oak add depth, while delicate floral and citrus undertones bring balance and elegance.

The texture is velvety and full-bodied, delivering a luxurious mouthfeel. The finish is long and evolving, with lingering sweetness, gentle spice, and refined oak.

Sophisticated and deeply complex, Black Art is designed for slow appreciation, offering a unique and contemplative whisky experience for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Tasting Profile & Food Pairings

Taste Notes (Edition 11.1)

Despite being unpeated, Black Art is famous for its incredible density and dark, "nocturnal" flavors.

  • Nose: Opens with orange marmalade, dried fruits, and old leather. As it breathes, it reveals poached pears, black cherries, and sweet mango, with a distinct floral hint of rosehip syrup and praline.
  • Palate: Thick and oily. You’ll find dates, raisins, and barley sugar balanced by savory tobacco leaf and cedar. Mid-palate notes include marzipan, dark plums, and toasted coconut.
  • Finish: Exceptionally long and rounded. It leaves a "Christmas cake" impression of sultanas, figs, and honey, with a gentle oak spice and a lingering marine freshness.

Food Pairings

Because Black Art is so complex and multi-layered, it pairs beautifully with "Old World" luxury foods that have both sweet and savory elements.

  • Savory: Seared Venison with a Cherry-Balsamic Glaze. The wine-cask influence (often suspected in Black Art) and the dark fruit notes in the whisky perfectly match the gamey meat and tart glaze.
  • Cheese: Extra-Aged Mimolette or Old Amsterdam Gouda. The salt crystals and nuttiness of these cheeses pull out the praline and cedar notes of the single malt.
  • Sweet: Black Forest Gateau (Cherry & Dark Chocolate). The cherry and cocoa notes in the dessert are a direct mirror of the whisky's "Pre-Renaissance" fruitiness.
  • Lux: A High-Quality Maduro Cigar. While not food, a rich, dark cigar is the classic companion to Black Art, as the smoke highlights the leather and tobacco notes on the nose.

About the brand

The "Anti-Transparency" Bottle: Bruichladdich is usually famous for being the most transparent distillery in Scotland. Black Art is the intentional exception—a tribute to the mystery of maturation where "only the liquid in the glass matters."

Pre-Renaissance Stock: The 11.1 uses rare "legacy" stock from the era when the distillery was closed or under-producing, making it a finite piece of history.

The Master's Trust: This series was started by Jim McEwan (Black Art 1-4) and handed over to Adam Hannett, who has continued the tradition of "secret blending" since 2016.
