Tasting Profile & Food Pairings

Taste Notes

  • Nose: A rich bouquet of blackberry, black cherry, and red currant, accented by nuances of nutmeg, clove, and fresh coffee grounds.
  • Palate: Medium-to-full bodied with a silky texture. It delivers flavors of dark plum and chocolate-covered raspberry, supported by fine-grained, persistent tannins.
  • Finish: A long, seamless exit with lingering notes of cassis, tobacco leaf, and a hint of cocoa dusting.

Food Pairings

  • Savory: Grilled Ribeye Steak or Braised Wagyu Beef Shank. The wine's firm tannins are designed to cut through the rich marbling of premium red meats.
  • Cheese: Aged Cheddar (18–24 months) or Parmigiano-Reggiano. The nutty, crystalline texture of aged cheeses provides a perfect fatty cushion for the wine's structure.
  • Vegetarian: Mushroom Risotto or Eggplant Parmesan. The earthy umami of mushrooms complements the wine's forest-floor and tobacco notes.

About the brand

Charles Krug is the oldest winery in Napa Valley, established in 1861 by Prussian immigrant Charles Krug. In 1943, it was purchased by Cesare and Rosa Mondavi and has remained in the Peter Mondavi Sr. family for over 80 years. The winery is credited with pioneering several winemaking techniques in California, including cold fermentation. Today, they manage over 850 acres of prime Napa vineyards, focusing on sustainable farming and classic Bordeaux varietals.
