About the product

Ardnamurchan's bold exploration of cask finishing reaches new heights with this exclusive Mezcal Cask Release. Matured in ex-mezcal casks, this single malt whisky absorbs the smoky, complex character of its previous spirit, creating a captivating fusion of Scottish craftsmanship and Mexican tradition. Expect a distinctive flavor profile where peaty notes intertwine with agave-inspired smokiness, delivering layers of spice, citrus, and subtle sweetness. The mezcal cask influence adds an unexpected depth that sets this release apart from traditional Ardnamurchan expressions. Limited to 2025 production, this is a collector's piece for whisky enthusiasts seeking something truly unconventional. Perfect for those who appreciate experimental cask work and want to explore the boundaries of single malt whisky.

Tasting Profile & Food Pairings

Taste Notes

  • Nose: A "green and funky" opening. Aromas of fresh Granny Smith apples and green bananas are underscored by a vegetal, grassy Mezcal influence and resilient ashy smoke.
  • Palate: Weighty and "fatty" in texture. It delivers a bright, herbaceous punch of eucalyptus, olive brine, and salty capers, balanced by the creamy vanilla sweetness from the initial bourbon aging.
  • Finish: Long and earthy. It exits with gentle wisps of integrated smoke, a chalky mineral essence, and a lingering, sweet-savory aftertaste.

Food Pairings

  • Savory: Grilled Octopus or Smoked Oysters. The saline, mineralic profile of the Mezcal finish is a perfect companion to "charred" seafood and briny shellfish.
  • Cheese: Smoked Provolone or Extra Sharp White Cheddar. The earthiness of the peat and the vegetal agave notes stand up well to smoky or high-acid cheeses.
  • Sweet: Lime Tart with Sea Salt or Dark Chocolate with Chili. The citrusy "Granny Smith" notes in the whisky harmonize with lime, while the 55% ABV can handle the heat of a spiced chocolate.

About the brand

Ardnamurchan is a cult-favorite distillery located on the remote Ardnamurchan Peninsula in the Scottish Highlands. Operated by the independent bottler Adelphi, the distillery is a pioneer in sustainable whisky production, powered by local hydro and biomass energy. This particular release is a historic first for the distillery, exploring the "wild, vegetal soul" of Mexican agave. It is one of the few Scotch whiskies on the market to utilize Mezcal casks, a practice only recently permitted by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) in 2019.
