Tasting Profile & Food Pairings

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: A "commanding" aroma of deep seasoned oak, dark cherry, and raisins. Reviewers also note a savory hint of maple syrup and dusty grains.
  • Palate: Hits with massive intensity. You'll find lush toffee, dark chocolate, and fudge, layered with tobacco leaf, aged leather, and molasses. Despite the 142.8 proof, it is praised for having a "surprising drinkability" once you get past the initial heat.
  • Finish: Extremely long and warming. The leather and tobacco notes linger for minutes, while the dark fruit fades into a rich, earthy oak dryness.

About the brand

The brand is named after one of the most influential figures in whiskey history. George T. Stagg (1835–1912) was a Civil War veteran and a whiskey salesman who eventually purchased the O.F.C. Distillery (now Buffalo Trace) from Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. during a period of financial hardship.Stagg didn't just maintain the distillery; he built it into the most dominant American distillery of the 19th century. In 1900, the distillery was actually renamed the George T. Stagg Distillery, a name it held for nearly a century until it was rebranded as Buffalo Trace in 1999.
