Tasting Profile & Food Pairings

Taste Notes

  • Nose: Elegant and fruit-forward. You’ll find aromas of sweet pear, baked apple, and a distinct floral honey note.
  • Palate: Exceptionally smooth with a velvety texture. The 10 years in ex-Brandy casks provide deep flavors of vanilla, dried apricots, and a hint of white chocolate.
  • Finish: Clean and delicate. It leaves a soft trail of toasted oak and baking spices.

Food Pairings

  • Savory: Pairs wonderfully with Sushi or Sashimi, as the rice-based spirit complements the delicate flavors of the fish.
  • Cheese: Try it with a Creamy Brie or a mild goat cheese.
  • Dessert: Excellent with Apple Tart or vanilla custard.
  • The "Neat" Serve: To appreciate the 10 years of aging, this is best served neat or with a single small ice cube. Avoid highballs, as the delicate brandy notes can be easily lost.

About the brand

Ohishi is a sixth-generation family-owned distillery located in the Kumamoto Prefecture of Japan. Unlike most Japanese whiskies that use malted barley, Ohishi specializes in Rice Whisky. They use a unique blend of two types of rice: organic "Gohyakumangoku" rice (grown using koi carp for weed control) and mochi rice. This combination, along with traditional Koji fermentation, creates a spirit that is incredibly smooth and floral compared to grain-based whiskies.
