Tasting Profile & Food Pairings
Taste Notes
- Nose: A sophisticated balance of fresh fruit (green apple, pear) and a gentle, honeyed sweetness. There are subtle hints of coastal smoke and a touch of maltiness.
- Palate: Incredibly smooth and approachable. It features layers of espresso beans, milk chocolate, and tobacco leaf, balanced by the brightness of citrus peel and stone fruits.
- Finish: Medium-long with a drying, oak-driven spice and a very faint, elegant wisp of peat smoke.
Food Pairings
- Savory: Pairs exceptionally well with Grilled Mackerel (Saba) or smoked salmon, where the slight peat smoke complements the oils of the fish.
- Cheese: Try it with a Creamy Camembert or a mild blue cheese.
- Dessert: Complements Salted Caramel Tart or dark chocolate.
- The "Mizuwari" Serve: While excellent neat, this is a favorite for the Japanese Highball or Mizuwari (mixed with cold water and ice), which stretches out the floral Miyagikyo notes.
About the brand
Nikka is one of Japan’s two most prestigious whisky producers, founded by Masataka Taketsuru—the "Father of Japanese Whisky." After studying in Scotland, Taketsuru returned to Japan to create a whisky that honored traditional Scottish methods while utilizing Japan's unique climate and water. The Taketsuru Pure Malt line is named in his honor and is a "vatted" or "pure" malt, meaning it is a blend of single malts from different distilleries with no grain whisky added.
